Fix OBS Audio Delay & Sync Issues
Quick Answer: Click the Gear Icon in the Audio Mixer >
Advanced
Audio Properties. Use the Sync Offset (ms) column. If audio is
early
(heard before seen), add a positive number (e.g., 200ms). If audio is late, use a negative
number.
Why Does Desync Happen?
Webcams and Capture Cards have latency (processing time). Your microphone is usually instant. This means your voice arrives 200-500ms before your face moves on screen. This "Mouth moves later than voice" effect is extremely distracting for viewers.
The Clap Test Method
- Start a Local Recording in OBS (don't stream yet).
- Clap your hands loudly in front of the camera. Do this 3-4 times clearly.
- Stop recording and watch the video in a player like VLC.
- Pause exactly when you hear the sound. Is your hands touching yet?
- Guestimate the delay (e.g., "sound was half a second early").
Applying the Fix
- Go to Advanced Audio Properties in OBS.
- Find your Mic/Aux.
- Set Sync Offset to 200ms (start here).
- Record another test. If it's better but not perfect, try 300ms.
- Repeat until the clap sound and visual clash perfectly.
